Mirror glass splashbacks are one of the most striking upgrades you can make to a kitchen or bathroom. Unlike paint or tiles, a full-length toughened mirror panel bounces light around the room, makes the space feel twice as large, and adds a clean, contemporary finish that never dates. Here is everything you need to know before you order.
What Is a Toughened Mirror Glass Splashback?
A toughened mirror splashback is a sheet of float glass that has been silvered on the back (just like a conventional mirror), then thermally toughened to meet BS EN 12150 — the same safety standard used for oven doors and shower screens. Toughening heats the glass to around 620°C and rapidly cools it, creating a surface that is four to five times stronger than ordinary glass and, crucially, breaks into small blunt fragments rather than large dangerous shards.
The result is a product that is both beautiful and fully compliant with UK building regulations for use around cooker hobs and in wet rooms.
Mirror Finishes Available
At Glass Splashbacks UK we offer four distinct mirror finishes, each with a different character:
- Silver Mirror — the classic, crisp reflection. Works in any kitchen or bathroom, particularly effective in north-facing rooms where it compensates for limited natural light.
- Bronze Mirror — a warm, amber-tinted reflection that complements cream, oak, and terracotta kitchens. Softer and less stark than silver.
- Antique Mirror — deliberately aged with a mottled, foxed appearance. No two panels are identical. Popular in heritage and country-style interiors.
- Liquid Mirror — a contemporary finish with a subtle texture that creates a rippled, water-like reflection. A real statement piece behind a hob or island.
Where Can You Use a Mirror Splashback?
Kitchen
The area between worktop and wall units — typically 600 mm high — is the most common installation. A mirror splashback here reflects the hob, the pendants above, and the view through the window, making even a small galley kitchen feel open. Our panels are heat-rated for use directly behind induction, ceramic, and gas hobs.
Bathroom
Above a basin or running the full width of a bath wall, a mirror splashback eliminates grout lines (and the mould that collects in them), is fully waterproof, and effortless to clean. The reflective surface amplifies any downlighters or wall sconces, improving perceived brightness considerably.
Utility Rooms and Boot Rooms
A narrower strip above a butler sink or utility worktop adds a touch of luxury to a working space and is surprisingly practical — it wipes clean with a damp cloth and never needs regrouting.
Key Benefits at a Glance
- Enlarges the room — reflection doubles the apparent depth of the space.
- Amplifies light — particularly valuable in dark kitchens and bathrooms.
- No grout lines — seamless surface with nowhere for mould or grease to hide.
- Heat resistant — safe behind gas and electric hobs when correctly installed.
- Hygienic and easy to clean — a soft cloth and glass cleaner is all that is needed.
- Bespoke sizing — cut to your exact dimensions, including cutouts for sockets and switches.
Sizing and Installation
Mirror splashbacks are made to measure. You supply your dimensions (and any cutout positions for sockets, pipes, or brackets) and we cut, polish, and toughen each panel to order. Standard lead time is 7–10 working days.
Installation is straightforward. Panels are bonded directly to a clean, dry wall using a neutral-cure silicone — never an acetate silicone, which releases acetic acid and can attack the mirror backing. No drilling through the glass is required. Most panels can be fitted by a competent DIYer in a couple of hours; see our How to Fit a Glass Splashback guide for full instructions.
One important practical note: ensure the wall surface behind the panel is painted or plastered smooth. Any texture, bumps, or previous tile adhesive will telegraph through and show in the reflection.
How to Measure for a Mirror Splashback
Measure the width of the area you want to cover, then the height from the top of the worktop to the underside of the wall units or ceiling. Deduct 2–3 mm on each edge to allow for wall imperfections and to ensure the silicone has room to grip. If in doubt, our measuring guide walks you through the process step by step, and our team is always available on 020 8099 9455 to talk you through it.
Caring for Your Mirror Splashback
Day-to-day cleaning requires nothing more than a soft microfibre cloth dampened with warm water. For grease splashes, a drop of washing-up liquid works perfectly. Avoid abrasive pads or cream cleaners — these will scratch the surface. Never spray glass cleaner directly onto the edges of the panel, as prolonged moisture ingress can cause the silver layer to oxidise at the perimeter (known as silvering edge-decay). A light spray to the cloth rather than the glass itself prevents this entirely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are toughened mirror splashbacks safe behind a gas hob?
Yes, provided there is a gap of at least 50 mm between the burner crown and the glass surface. All our mirror panels are manufactured to BS EN 12150 toughened safety glass standard. We recommend consulting a Gas Safe engineer if you are unsure about clearances on your particular hob model.
Will a mirror splashback make my kitchen look smaller?
The opposite — the reflection creates the illusion of depth and makes the room feel significantly larger. This effect is especially noticeable in narrow galley kitchens and small bathrooms.
Can I have a mirror splashback with an electric socket cutout?
Yes. Provide the position and size of your socket when ordering and we will cut the aperture precisely. The glass is toughened after cutting, so the edges around the cutout are fully polished and safe.
How do I prevent the edges going black?
Spray cleaner or moisture should never be applied directly to the edges. Ensure the silicone seal at the perimeter is continuous and intact. If you notice any edge blackening developing, reseal that section promptly to stop moisture reaching the mirror backing.
What is the difference between silver and bronze mirror?
Silver mirror gives a true, neutral reflection — the same as a standard bathroom mirror. Bronze mirror has a warm amber tint to the reflection, which many people find more flattering under kitchen or bathroom lighting. Bronze works particularly well with warm-toned cabinetry such as cream, walnut, or oak.
