How to Fit a Glass Splashback

Fitting a glass splashback is a straightforward DIY task. With the right adhesive and a steady pair of hands, most homeowners can complete a standard kitchen or bathroom splashback in under two hours.

What you will need

  • Neutral-cure silicone adhesive suitable for glass (not acetoxy/vinegar-cure near metals)
  • Silicone gun
  • Degreaser or isopropyl alcohol and clean cloths
  • Painter’s tape / masking tape
  • A spirit level
  • Suction cup lifters (recommended for large panels)
  • A helper for panels larger than 600mm × 600mm

Step-by-step fitting guide

Step 1 — Prepare the wall surface

The wall must be clean, dry, flat and free from grease, dust or loose material. Sand down any high spots on plaster. If fitting over existing tiles, ensure they are fully adhered — tap each tile to check for hollow spots. Wipe the surface with degreaser and allow to dry completely.

Step 2 — Dry-fit the panel

Before applying any adhesive, hold the panel against the wall to confirm it fits correctly and all socket cutouts align. Mark the top edge lightly with a pencil so you know exactly where to position it.

Step 3 — Prepare the back of the glass

Wipe the back face of the glass panel with isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry. This removes any manufacturing residue and ensures a strong adhesive bond.

Step 4 — Apply the silicone adhesive

Apply the neutral-cure silicone in a series of S-curves or zig-zag lines across the back of the glass, keeping blobs away from the very edges (leave a 20mm border). Do not apply in a continuous perimeter — trapped air must be able to escape.

Step 5 — Position and press the panel

With your helper, carefully lift the panel and press it firmly against the wall, aligning with your pencil marks and checking level with a spirit level. Apply firm, even pressure across the whole surface for 30–60 seconds. Use temporary masking-tape tabs to hold the panel in position while the silicone cures.

Step 6 — Seal the edges

Once the adhesive has cured (usually 24 hours), apply a neat bead of matching colour silicone sealant around all exposed edges and where the glass meets the worktop. Smooth with a wetted finger and remove tape cleanly.

Step 7 — Final clean

Remove any adhesive smears with a plastic scraper or acetone on a cloth. Polish the glass with a clean dry microfibre cloth for a perfect finish.
