How to Care for Your Glass Splashback
One of the biggest advantages of a glass splashback is how easy it is to keep clean. Unlike grout lines in tiling, glass has a smooth, non-porous surface that resists staining and bacteria. Follow these simple guidelines to keep your splashback looking perfect for years.
Routine cleaning
Step 1 — Wipe down after cooking or use
The easiest way to maintain your splashback is to wipe it down after each use while any grease or splatter is still warm and loose. Use a soft damp cloth or microfibre cloth. This takes seconds and prevents build-up.
Step 2 — Use a glass cleaner for fingerprints and smears
For fingerprints, smears or light grease, apply a small amount of household glass cleaner (such as Windolene) to a clean microfibre cloth and wipe in circular motions, then buff dry with a second clean cloth. Avoid spraying cleaner directly onto the glass near electrical sockets.
Step 3 — Tackle stubborn grease with washing-up liquid
For heavier grease build-up, a small amount of washing-up liquid in warm water works well. Apply with a soft cloth, rinse with a clean damp cloth, then dry immediately to prevent water marks.
What to avoid
Step 4 — Never use abrasive cleaners or pads
Avoid scouring pads, steel wool, cream cleaners or any product containing abrasive particles. These will scratch the glass surface and dull the finish permanently.
Step 5 — Avoid solvent-based cleaners near silicone edges
Strong solvents such as acetone or bleach-based sprays can degrade the silicone sealant around the edges over time. Use water-based glass cleaners for routine maintenance.
Step 6 — Check and refresh edge sealant periodically
Inspect the silicone bead around the edges of your splashback once a year. If you see cracking, shrinkage or discolouration, remove the old sealant with a silicone remover tool and re-apply a fresh bead of neutral-cure silicone. This keeps moisture from getting behind the panel.
Long-term care tips
- Never use a high-pressure steam cleaner directly on the glass or silicone joints.
- If a chip or crack appears, contact us — in most cases the panel can be replaced and refitted easily.
- Coloured painted-back glass splashbacks should never be cleaned from the rear — always clean from the front face only.
